titleOfInvention | Prostate fluid biopsy to detect prostate cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy |
abstract | A method of inducing detachment of target prostate cells from a prostate organ, collecting the cells, and subsequently examining the cell population is disclosed. Such a method involves administration of an agent that promotes detachment of the target cell from within the prostate, which then moves to the urethra. Exemplary agents include 5-α reductase inhibitors. Cells induced to migrate into the urethra are then collected non-invasively, for example through urine or semen samples. Such a collection is further strategically calculated for the administration of the drug to maximize sample collection of the target cells of interest. Exfoliated prostate epithelial cells then detect prostate cancer, predict / measure prostate cancer susceptibility to a regimen, monitor therapy for patients who have negative prostate biopsy results but continue to show symptoms consistent with prostate cancer, and Used for purposes such as identification of false positive results associated with biomarker assays. |
