A method for determining whether a compound is immunomodulatory is provided. The method comprises the steps of: (a) contacting a first cell with a compound of interest; optionally, the cell is a cancer cell, or, optionally, the cell is an immune cell; Obtaining a first sample from the first cells of step (a); (c) determining the level of a biomarker in the first sample; and (d) the biomarker of step (c). Comparing the level of the biomarker with the level of the same protein obtained from a reference sample, wherein the change in the level of the biomarker when compared to the reference sample indicates the efficacy of the compound as an immunomodulatory compound.
