abstract Provided is a gas sensor that can appropriately secure an introduction amount of a reference gas to a reference electrode and can enhance the heat conductivity of a sensor element. A sensor element 2 of a gas sensor 1 includes a solid electrolyte body 31, a detection electrode 311, a reference electrode 312, insulators 33A and 33B, a heating element 34, and a reference gas duct 36. The reference gas duct 36 is formed from the rear end opening 360 in the longitudinal direction L of the reference gas duct 36 to the arrangement position of the reference electrode 312 adjacent to the second main surface 302 of the solid electrolyte body 31 in the second insulator 33B. The reference gas A is introduced from the rear end opening 360 to the reference electrode 312. The cross sectional area S1 of the cross section perpendicular to the long direction L of the reference gas duct 36 at the rear end position 312A of the reference electrode 312 in the longitudinal direction L is the cross sectional area of the cross section of the reference gas duct 36 at the rear end opening 360.
