titleOfInvention | Methods for treating and diagnosing blindness diseases |
abstract | Provided are methods and compositions useful for diagnosis, treatment or prevention of blindness diseases, including the search for drugs that are effective against blindness diseases. The eye includes (i) an amount of a fluorescent compound effective to indicate the presence of a blindness disease in an animal and (ii) an amount of a toxin effective to induce atrophy of the eye tissue. Administering an effective amount of a test compound to the animal; (b) exposing the eye to light having a wavelength and intensity effective to cause the fluorescent compound to fluoresce; (c) the fluorescence pattern of the eye Comparing the fluorescence pattern of the eye of an animal containing a fluorescent compound and a toxin but not the test compound; (d) the result of the comparison in step (c) is that the test compound is useful in the treatment of blindness disease If present, a method for identifying whether a candidate compound is useful in the treatment of blindness disease, comprising selecting a test compound as a candidate compound.
