Disclosed is a composition and method for uniformly coating or glazing a dried kibble in order to improve the deliciousness of the dried pet food kibble without compromising the crunchiness of the dried pet food kibble over a long period of time. The coating composition includes water and at least one of a gum or modified starch. The coating composition is one of a flavoring, coloring, emulsified or granular meat, emulsified or granular fruit or vegetable, antioxidant, vitamin, mineral, non-proliferating microorganism, dietary fiber or prebiotic. Additional raw materials such as one or more may be included. In one embodiment, the coating composition can include dextrose and / or glycine. After mixing and retorting, the coating composition can be a viscous paste having a viscosity of 2500 to 4000 centipoise, preferably 3000 to 3500 centipoise, when measured at room temperature.
