An apparatus and method of use for treating a subject suffering from airflow obstruction such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in need of respiratory support. A sensor senses when a subject exhales, and (b) at least a portion of a breath expiratory phase in response to the sensing to assist in exhalation of the subject.
