abstract | Provided is a method for producing polyarylene sulfide, which does not add a metal compound, generates a small amount of gas during heating, and has excellent melt stability. A polyarylene sulfide prepolymer comprising at least 50% by weight or more of a cyclic polyarylene sulfide represented by the formula (A) and having a repeating unit number m = 4 to 50 in the formula is represented by a polyarylene sulfide prepolymer. Presence of 0.001 to 20 mol% of a biphenyl type halogenated aromatic compound in which the linking group is any electron-withdrawing group selected from a sulfonyl group, a sulfoxide group, and a carbonyl group with respect to the sulfur atom in Heat down.
