A silicon oxide / carbon composite containing carbon and silicon oxide, wherein the silicon oxide is represented by SiOx (x is not less than 0.8 and less than 2.0). It is a silicon oxide / carbon composite in which granular silicon oxide having a particle size of 1 nm or more and less than 100 nm is present on the surface of the object.
