A handheld medical imaging device and related techniques are provided for performing in situ observation of residual cancer cells in a tumor resection bed. A handheld medical imaging device (2) includes a rigid imaging tip (4) optically associated with a light detector (20), the end of the rigid imaging tip being placed in contact with tissue (24) The imaging tip is used to identify abnormal tissue during surgery. A sufficient amount of contrast agent may be used to generate a fluorescent signal, and has the ability to reliably detect residual tumors of millimeter to sub-millimeter size.
