abstract Novel methods for identifying a specific family of olfactory receptors in mammals against odorants or scents, particularly indole and skatole malodors, as well as compounds that modulate their activity (compounds that block, enhance, mask or mimic) The use of said method in an assay that can be used for discovery. A mouse orphan olfactory receptor is identified from olfactory neurons that respond to a target compound. The resulting receptors and their human counterparts can be screened against test compounds in the assay, thereby identifying them as odorants or odor receptors, in particular malodor receptors, and then for example humans Modulators that inhibit the perception of malodor in can be found.
