abstract The present invention provides a method for changing the rheological behavior of an aqueous or alcohol-based formulation. Monodispersed glycogen nanoparticles or monodisperse phytoglycogen nanoparticles are multifunctional additives suitable for use in aqueous or alcoholic cosmetics, pharmaceuticals or food formulations. Nanoparticles can be isolated from a variety of raw materials (eg, corn) and optionally modified with a wide range of organic components (eg, octenyl succinic acid). The monodisperse, granular nature of glycogen / phytoglycogen makes such materials useful as rheology modifiers (including modulation of thixotropic behavior), organic and biological material stabilizers, and light stabilizers in sunscreens.
