abstract | A method for decontaminating an article having a porous outer surface. The method includes the following steps: providing a decontamination chamber; conveying the article through the decontamination chamber at a predetermined rate so that the article is placed in the decontamination chamber for a predetermined period of time. A sterilant vapor source is provided, which supplies a sterilant vapor whose temperature is within a predetermined allowable temperature range and whose concentration is within a predetermined allowable concentration range. Delivering sterilant vapor from a source of sterilant vapor to the decontamination chamber; exposing the article to the sterilant vapor. The predetermined time period and the predetermined acceptable concentration range of the sterilant vapor are selected so that the sterilant vapor does not penetrate the porous outer surface of the article.
