abstract | The present invention relates to a method for identifying B cells, in particular an in vitro method, which comprises methylation of at least one CpG position in a mammalian gene region for low density lipoprotein receptor associated protein 5 (LRP5). The present invention relates to a method comprising analyzing a state, wherein demethylation or lack of methylation of the gene region when compared to non-B cells is indicative of B cells. The analysis according to the invention makes it possible to identify B cells at the epigenetic level and to distinguish them from all other cells, for example other blood cells or immune cells, in a composite sample. The present invention further provides an improved method for quantifying B cells, particularly in complex samples. This method can preferably be performed without the step of purifying and / or enriching cells in whole blood and / or non-trypsinized tissue.
