titleOfInvention | Bioremediation of geological materials contaminated with heavy metals by resident microorganisms |
abstract | A method for increasing the concentration of metal carbonates in geological materials contaminated with heavy metals using resident ureolytic microorganisms. The method can be used for bioremediation of geomaterials contaminated with heavy metals. In one embodiment, the present invention is a method for increasing the concentration of metal carbonates other than calcium carbonate in a geological material contaminated with heavy metals. In accordance with this embodiment of the present invention, the enrichment process that provides a source of nutrients and urea enhances the growth of ureolytic microorganisms in the geological material contaminated with heavy metals, Is converted to ammonium and carbonate ions, which then combine with heavy metal ions in the contaminated geological material to form metal carbonates, thereby increasing the concentration of metal carbonates. |
