A method of using a nitrogen-containing compound as a corrosion inhibitor is disclosed. The method is used to inhibit corrosion of metal surfaces in contact with aqueous systems using 2-substituted imidazoles and 2-substituted benzimidazoles, and provides improved protection from metal corrosion in aqueous systems. provide. The method involves the use of a corrosion inhibitor that is generally resistant to halogen attack and that provides good corrosion resistance in the presence of halogenated biocides.
