titleOfInvention | Transalkylated cyclohexylbenzyl and biphenyl compounds |
abstract | A process for selective alkylation and / or dealkylation of one ring of a cyclohexylbenzyl and / or biphenyl compound is provided. The selective alkylation and / or dealkylation occurs via a transalkylation reaction in which the phenyl moiety of the cyclohexylbenzyl compound is exchanged between the cyclohexylbenzyl compound and the substituted or unsubstituted benzene. Transalkylated cyclohexylbenzyl can be dehydrogenated to give the corresponding biphenyl compound. Using the same reaction process for a biphenyl compound, one phenyl ring of the biphenyl compound is first partially hydrogenated to give the corresponding cyclohexylbenzyl compound, which can undergo transalkylation and optionally subsequent dehydrogenation. A combination of two or more of partial hydrogenation, transalkylation and dehydrogenation enables target substitution (or desubstitution) of only one ring of cyclohexylbenzyl and / or biphenyl compounds, and is excellent in the design of the synthesis of these compounds.
