A nitrogen oxide storage material 1 containing at least one of a first composite oxide and a second composite oxide, a method for producing the same, and an exhaust gas purification catalyst in which the nitrogen oxide storage material 1 is supported on a carrier. . The first composite oxide is represented by the general formula I: MXO 3-δ . The second composite oxide is represented by the general formula II: M 3 X 2 O 7-δ . M in general formula I and general formula II consists of at least one selected from the group consisting of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and lanthanoid metals.
