abstract The present invention provides a method for extracting and isolating certain compounds from tobacco that can be used as flavor components for use in smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions. Receiving a plant material of Nicotiana species, contacting the plant material with the solvent for a time and under conditions sufficient to extract one or more desired compounds from the plant material into the solvent; Separating a solvent containing one or more desired compounds from plant material and purifying the solvent containing one or more desired compounds to provide an isolate. The resulting isolate can contain greater than 90% by weight of a given compound and can be used as a flavor component for tobacco materials used in smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions.
