Embodiments of the present invention include a coating comprising a layer of oligomerized polyphenol. The oligomerized polyphenol layer can be used as an intermediate coating in medical devices, forming hydrogen bonds with a synthetic or natural polymer, instead the synthetic or natural polymer is used as the uppermost coating Or further tie to another coating. Multi-layer coatings can provide properties such as blood affinity or lubricity. In another embodiment, the oligomerized polyphenol layer is used as a hemostatic layer on the medical device and is configured to contact blood to promote clotting. An oligomerized polyphenol layer can also be used on the inner surface (eg, inner diameter) of a medical device, thereby preventing bacterial binding. The oligomerized polyphenol layer can also be used on the surface of an in vitro diagnostic device or on the surface of a cell culture device, thereby facilitating the adsorption of biomolecules. |
