Methods and granules for coating a body are provided. Each granule comprises silicon (Si), carbon (C), chromium (Cr), and an iron group metal selected from iron (Fe), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni). When at least a threshold amount of iron group metal is accessible to Si, C and Cr, the relative amount of Si, C and Cr is less than 1300 ° C. for the molten phase comprising Si, C, Cr and the iron group metal. Forming at the melting temperature; each granule comprises substantially less than a threshold amount of an iron group metal. A second source of iron group metal is provided. The combination of granules and second source is formed such that at least a threshold amount of iron group metal is accessible to Si, C and Cr. The granule and the second source are heated to at least the melting temperature to form a molten phase in contact with the body. Heating is then stopped to solidify the molten phase to provide a coated body. |
