Precipitated alumina and method for preparing the same |
abstract |
A method for preparing alumina having a seeding process and a sedimentation process. During the seeding process, a seed crystal mixture is prepared by adding an aluminum salt to the aqueous solution and then adding an alkali metal aluminate to the mixture while maintaining the seed crystal mixture at a generally neutral pH. The precipitation process gives precipitated alumina by simultaneously adding aluminum salt and alkali metal aluminate to the seed crystal mixture while maintaining the pH at 6.9-7.8. The recovered precipitated alumina has the following characteristics: i) 33-42 angstrom crystallite size (using XRD) at (120) diagonal; ii) 6.30-6.59 angstrom crystallite spacing d (020); iii) high porosity with an average pore size of 115-166 angstroms; iv) relatively low bulk density of 250-350 kg / m 3 ; v) 60- after calcination at 1100 ° C. for 24 hours A surface area of 80 m 2 / g; and vi) at least one, preferably all, of a pore volume of 0.8-1.1 m 3 / g after calcining at 1000 ° C. for 1 hour.
