abstract |
In a process for producing para-xylene, a toluene-containing stream is contacted with a methylating agent under conditions effective to convert toluene to xylene to produce a methylated effluent stream. Para-xylene is recovered from the methylated effluent stream to produce a para-xylene-poor stream, and a portion of the para-xylene-poor stream is effective to produce a first isomerized stream. A portion of the stream that is contacted with the xylene isomerization catalyst under isomerization conditions and is otherwise paraxylene-poor is subject to xylene isomerization under gas phase isomerization conditions effective to produce a second isomerized stream. Contacted with a fluorination catalyst. The first and second isomerized streams are recycled to the paraxylene recovery process. [Selection] Figure 1 |
