A phosphor used in a light emitting device capable of obtaining light having a spectrum close to that of natural light is provided. The phosphor of the present invention has a general formula of MI 8 Mg (MIIO 4 ) 4 Cl 2 : Eu 2+ (where MI is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr, and Ba) MII is selected from the group consisting of Si and Ti, and is represented by at least one element which essentially requires Ti.
