Provided are a method for producing a terminal conjugated dienal compound that does not require an oxidation reaction, and a terminal hydroxyacetal compound that is a useful intermediate of the method. SOLUTION: Using an alkynal = acetal compound (1) as a starting material, an organometallic compound (2) by a metalation reaction, a hydroxyalkynal = acetal compound (3) by an addition reaction of ethylene = oxide, and a triple bond by a reduction reaction. Z-double bond is converted to (E) -hydroxyalkenal = acetal compound (4), hydroxyl group is converted to leaving group X, (E) -alkenal = acetal compound (5), and HX is removed. And (E) -dienal = acetal compound (6) to convert the acetal into an aldehyde to obtain (E) -dienal compound (7). [Selection figure] None |
