abstract An encoder for detecting the intrusion of liquid by light is provided. An optical encoder according to the present invention includes a drive shaft of a rotary motor, a rotary shaft 1 connected to a rotating body rotated by the rotary motor, and a movement connected so as to be orthogonal to the rotary shaft 1. A slit 2, a fixed slit 3, a light projecting unit 4, and a light receiving element unit 5 are provided. The moving slit 2 and the fixed slit 3 include radial slit portions 2A and 3A, respectively. The light receiving element unit 5 includes a position detection pattern 5A and a pattern 5B for detecting liquid intrusion. Furthermore, at least one of the moving slit 12 and the fixed slit 13 includes patterns 12B and 13B for detecting the ingress of liquid. [Selection] Figure 2
