abstract | An object of the present invention is to provide a method of industrially advantageously obtaining m-xylene having a high purity by separating only m-xylene from a xylene mixture. A method for separating m-xylene from a mixture containing m-xylene and one or more isomers thereof, comprising the following steps (1) to (3). (1) To the mixture, an extractant composed of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride and a first diluent are added, and the mixture is composed of m-xylene-hydrogen fluoride-boron trifluoride by acid-base extraction. Separating the complex solution from the mixture after forming a complex; (2) To the complex solution, a second diluent and an alkylbenzene having 9 to 10 carbon atoms having a relative basicity with respect to m-xylene of 1.6 or more as a desorbing agent are added to remove m-xylene.
