Provided are a substituted sugar compound, a dental composition containing the substituted sugar compound, and a method of using the dental composition. In one embodiment, the substituted sugar amide compound includes a hydrophobic group and at least one free radical polymerizable group, and the hydrophobic group is bonded to the ethylenically unsaturated carbon atom of the free radical polymerizable group.
