A composition and method for treating an oral surface with a peracid-based benefit agent. A composition comprising, for example, a peroxygen source, such as peracetic acid, and a CE-7 carbohydrate esterase (perhydrolase) having perhydrolysis activity separately. Peracid is generated enzymatically from the carboxylic ester substrate in the mouth by the enzyme. Peracid benefit agents can be used for oral surface bleaching, whitening, disinfection, de-staining, deodorization, biofilm reduction or removal, and combinations thereof. In addition, perhydrolyzing activity can be targeted to the oral surface using a fusion protein comprising a perhydrolase linked directly or via an optional linker to a peptide component having affinity for the oral surface. .
