abstract | Copolymer comprising a vinyl cyanide monomer unit and an aromatic vinyl monomer unit, wherein the content of the acrylic polymer having a ring structure in the main chain is 51% by weight or more and 75% by weight or less. An object of the present invention is to provide a film having few foreign matter defects in a negative retardation film obtained by stretching a thermoplastic resin having a combined content of 25 wt% or more and 49 wt% or less. A method for producing a thermoplastic resin as described above, wherein the acrylic polymer undergoes a cyclocondensation reaction by using an acidic substance or a basic substance as a catalyst, and an acrylic polymer having a cyclic structure in the main chain. A cyclization step for obtaining a coalescence, and a neutralization step for neutralizing the catalyst with a basic substance or an acidic substance in an amount of 0.2 to 0.9 molar equivalents relative to the amount of the catalyst used.
