To provide a battery active material capable of realizing a nonaqueous electrolyte battery capable of exhibiting a high charge / discharge capacity, a high battery voltage, and excellent life characteristics. According to one embodiment, an active material for a battery including a composite oxide having a monoclinic crystal structure is provided. This composite oxide is represented by the general formula LiwNa4-xM1yTi6-zM2zO14 + δ. Here, M1 is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Rb, Cs, K and H.
