abstract Provided is a liquid crystal aligning agent capable of producing a liquid crystal element exhibiting good liquid crystal alignment properties and excellent electric characteristics and contrast characteristics even if the exposure amount is reduced in a photo-alignment step. A liquid crystal aligning agent contains a polymer [P] having a partial structure represented by the following formula (1) in the main chain. (R 1 is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a divalent linking group which is bonded to Ar 1 to form a part of the ring, R 4 Is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a divalent linking group that forms part of the ring by bonding to Ar 2 , R 2 , R 3 , R 5 and R 6 are a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, Ar 1 and Ar 2 are cyclic groups having an aromatic ring or a heterocyclic ring.
