abstract The optical sensor may include a plurality of light emitters configured to emit light to the fluid sample via the light path. Light from the illuminant can cause fluorescence from the sample and / or scattering from the sample. Scattered light and fluorescence can be received by the optical detector of the sensor via the light path and can be used to determine at least one characteristic of the fluid sample. The second optical detector can provide a reference measurement of the amount of light emitted to the sample. In one example, the optical detector can detect scattered light and fluorescence simultaneously. In other examples, light is emitted and detected alternately. The sensor can be part of a system that includes one or more controllers configured to control light emission of the fluid sample and detection of light from the fluid sample. The controller can use the detected light to determine at least one characteristic of the fluid sample.
