abstract Provided herein are methods and systems for generating ions from a liquid sample for mass spectroscopy. In various aspects, the method and system can facilitate the breakdown of a jet of a liquid sample upon injection into an ionization chamber. In some aspects, methods and systems perturb a liquid sample prior to ejection to increase the internal energy of the sample to promote droplet formation when the liquid sample is injected into an ionization chamber .
