Methods are provided for enhancing the effectiveness of aspirin. Also provided are methods for reducing pain or preventing or treating heart attacks, strokes, or blood clots in a subject in need of pain reduction or heart attack, stroke, or blood clot prevention or treatment. The method comprises orally administering to a subject a first composition comprising a first amount of aspirin and a second composition comprising a second amount of aspirin, wherein the first composition Is formulated to disintegrate or dissolve in the oral cavity upon administration and to rapidly release the first composition of aspirin in the subject, wherein the second composition comprises: It is substantially more difficult to disintegrate or dissolve in the oral cavity than the present composition, but is formulated to be ingestible and releasable in the subject's digestive tract.
