titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for applying force to a sample for detection using electromechanical means |
abstract | Embodiments of the present invention are directed to applying contact pressure to a sample while undergoing ATR infrared interrogation. As a general mode of operation, after the solid sample is placed on the ATR element, the force actuator moves the anvil arm to apply a contact force to the sample against the ATR. Thereafter, when the scan is over, the user can see the results of one or more scans. The force actuator can be a motor or solenoid or other type of force actuator. The applied contact force can be a fixed force, can be a user selectable force, or can be automatically controlled through feedback from the spectrometer based on the spectroscopic characteristics of the sample material.
