Disclosed are a separator for an electric double layer capacitor and an electric double layer capacitor that suppresses swelling of a case due to generation of internal gas and has excellent long-term stability of the electric double layer capacitor. A lithium compound that captures protons is included. A lithium compound layer 4 containing a lithium compound is formed on one side or both sides of the separator 3.
