Provided is a tissue protective peptide capable of binding to a tissue protective receptor complex. Provided are a method for treating or preventing a disease or disorder using a tissue protective peptide, and a method for enhancing excitable tissue function using a tissue protective peptide. Derived from or part of a cytokine receptor ligand, including erythropoietin (EPO), that is not involved in binding of the ligand to the receptor complex, eg, binding to an EPO receptor homodimer Tissue protective peptide that shares a common sequence with.
