A nanomaterial for use in water purification or the like is provided. Disclosed is a nanocomposite comprising reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and at least one metal and metal oxide. Also disclosed are adsorbents comprising nanocomposites and adsorbents comprising nanocomposites bound to silica by using chitosan. A filtration device comprising the nanocomposite and / or adsorbent is also disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for making the nanocomposites, adsorbents, and filtration devices described herein.
