A method and assembly utilizing an open cell cellular solid material for a component separation apparatus for separating one or more process streams into component process streams having a desired composition. An apparatus comprising: a three-dimensional cellular solid material having one or more cells ranging in size from 6 to 100 microns, wherein the cellular solid material has a plurality of cell dimensions and shapes. 22, the cellular solid material 15 is positioned in at least one section 26, 28 of the apparatus 22, and two or more phases of the at least one process stream 20 are combined with the cellular solid material 15. Leads into the containing areas 26, 28, contact two or more phases at the surface of the cellular solid material 15, and at least a portion of one or more phases from the device 22 have the desired composition.
