abstract | A new method for identifying an original magnetic field existing in a measurement region is proposed. A light source unit 2 irradiates a gas cell 3 arranged in a measurement region with linearly polarized light whose traveling direction is the z-axis direction and whose electric field vibration direction is the y-axis direction. The polarimeter 4 detects the optical characteristics of the light transmitted through the gas cell 3. The magnetic field generator 7 applies an artificial magnetic field that varies the z-axis component, the y-axis component, the z-axis direction, and the x-axis component orthogonal to the y-axis direction to the measurement region. Then, the arithmetic control unit 5 changes the z-axis component and the other of the y-axis component and the x-axis component while changing one of the y-axis component and the x-axis component to a fixed value.
