A system and method for communicating packets having multiple formats. A signal (SIG) field in the preamble of the packet indicates whether an extended field is included in the packet, such as an extended SIG field or a SIG-B field. One or more detectors are used to automatically detect a packet formatted as one of at least two different formats based on the short training field (STF) of the received packet.
