abstract The present invention provides a surgical stapler with a manual release function that is hand-held and electrically self-driven. A surgical end effector having an actuating assembly for performing a surgical procedure and a handle coupled to the end effector for actuating the assembly. A portion of the assembly moves between a starting position and a fully actuated position. The handle has a self-supporting power source and a drive assembly that is disposed entirely within the handle. The drive assembly has an electrically driven motor and a controller electrically connected to the power source and the motor. The controller selectively operates the motor. The transmission mechanically couples the motor to the movable part and, when the motor is activated, selectively places the movable part somewhere between the starting position and the fully extended position. Manual release is mechanically connected to the transmission and selectively interrupts the transmission, during which the movable part is placed towards the starting position independent of motor operation.
