A method is provided for producing 3-hydroxypropionic acid and other products. The present invention relates to metabolically modified microbial strains, such as bacterial strains, that have increased use of malonyl-CoA for the production of chemical products containing 3-hydroxypropionic acid. In certain embodiments, the cell culture comprises an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase or the microorganism has been genetically modified to reduce enzyme activity in the fatty acid synthase pathway of the microorganism. For example, the fatty acid synthase inhibitor may be selected from the group consisting of thiolactomycin, triclosan, cerulenin, thienodiazaboline, isoniazid and analogs thereof.
