abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge propagation type optical time domain reflectometer and a method for using the same. The OTDR system utilizes a laser source that is turned on until it is turned “on” and the light reaches the end of the fiber span to be measured (ie, the fiber span is fully illuminated). . At any point after the fiber is fully illuminated, the laser source can be turned “off”. The return (reflected and backscattered) signal is directed into the OTDR photodetector and measured from the time the fiber span begins to be illuminated. The measurement is performed by sampling the return signal at a predetermined time interval defined as the sampling rate. The generated output samples are then subjected to post-processing of a differential arithmetic format that generates a conventional OTDR trace from the collected data. [Selection] Figure 3
