A method of treating a disease or condition by altering a response mediated by an opioid receptor. 4-hydroxybenzomorphane containing carboxamide or thiocarboxamide at the 3-position represented by the following formula: A compound having a strong affinity for an opioid receptor utilizing the benzomorphan as an analgesic, an antidiarrheal agent, an anticonvulsant, an antitussive, and an anti-drug treatment.
