Disclosed herein is a substrate having a surface that has been modified to impart multi-scale roughness, thereby obtaining superhydrophobicity and / or superoleophobicity. The surface is composed of a microscale pillar pattern in which a plurality of nanoparticles having a convex shape of a concave corner are attached to the top of the pillar. In order to obtain the desired superoleophobicity, the area fraction of the surface is also selected. Also disclosed herein is a method for producing a modified surface that is optionally vapor deposited after photolithography. The substrate can be formed into a useful article or preform article.
