abstract |
A continuous fiber composite and a method of forming a continuous fiber composite are described. A continuous fiber composite includes a plurality of unidirectionally aligned continuous fibers embedded within a polyarylene sulfide polymer. Continuous fiber composites contain very high loadings, for example, greater than about 40% by weight of continuous fibers. A continuous fiber composite is formed by reacting a starting polyarylene sulfide with a reactive functionalized disulfide compound in a melt processing unit. A reaction between the starting polyarylene sulfide and the reactive functionalized disulfide compound forms a reactive functionalized polyarylene sulfide. By embedding continuous fibers in a reactive functionalized polyarylene sulfide, the adhesion between the polyarylene sulfide polymer and the fibers can be improved by the reactivity of the polyarylene sulfide.
