abstract | A method and apparatus for extracting nucleic acids from a biological sample is described. The device includes a substrate, such as a cellulose filter, functionalized with a biocide having a plurality of functional groups including a binding moiety, a hydrophobic moiety, and a charged moiety that are responsible for binding of the drug to the substrate. Various functional groups act to bind the drug to the substrate, weaken or dissolve the cell wall or membrane of the sample, and retain the nucleic acid on the substrate. A preferred biocide is a silylated quaternary ammonium compound (SiQAC), such as 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecylammonium chloride. |
