[Problem solving means] A polymer compound for use in a surface director alignment layer, A polymer backbone comprising repeating units; a first side group attached to at least some of the repeating units and comprising a photofunctional moiety comprising at least one benzophenone moiety or derivative thereof; and at least some of the repeating units There is provided a polymer compound comprising a bonded second side group having a significant shape anisotropy capable of inducing a vertical alignment of the liquid crystal material. A method of forming a surface director alignment layer using the polymer compound and a method of forming a liquid crystal cell using the polymer compound are also provided. By using a benzophenone moiety as a photofunctional moiety in a polymer compound for use in a surface director alignment layer, the desired pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal cell can be accurately controlled by light irradiation of the polymer.
