abstract | Articles comprising an expanded fluoropolymer membrane having serpentine fibrils are provided. The fluoropolymer membrane exhibits high extensibility while substantially retaining the strength properties of the fluoropolymer membrane. The membrane can include a fluoropolymer and / or an elastomer. Further, the article has an elongation of at least about 100% in at least one direction and a matrix tensile strength of at least about 50 MPa. The article comprises (1) stretching a dried extruded fluoropolymer tape in at least one direction to produce a stretched fluoropolymer membrane, and (2) at least by applying heat or adding a solvent. It can be formed by shrinking a stretched fluoropolymer membrane in one stretch direction. The tensile force loading at least partially straightens the serpentine fibrils, thereby stretching the article. The expanded fluoropolymer membrane can comprise a fibril-only microstructure. The membrane can be infiltrated with an elastomeric material to form a composite material. |
